Global Crackdown on Ransomware Networks by Multiple Countries
In a significant international crackdown named “Endgame,” law enforcement agencies across several countries, under the coordination of Eurojust, the European Union’s judicial cooperation agency, have targeted ransomware networks accused of extorting hundreds of millions of dollars. The operation saw the seizure of over 2000 internet domains and 100 servers globally, involving countries such as France, Germany, Denmark, the Netherlands, Ukraine, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Raids conducted in Ukraine, Portugal, the Netherlands, and Armenia led to the arrest of four high-value suspects, with three in Ukraine and one in Armenia. This latest effort to combat ransomware and malware operations sends a clear message to cybercriminals that they are not beyond reach. The operation specifically targeted malware droppers like IcedID, Pikabot, Smokeloader, Bumblebee, and Trickbot, used in phishing emails to spread ransomware. German authorities are further seeking the arrest of seven individuals linked to the Trickbot malware, with an eighth suspected of leading the Smokeloader bot application. Europol has indicated that such cybercrime takedowns will continue, signaling ongoing efforts to combat cyber threats.
