Apple’s ‘Project Greymatter’ AI Debut at WWDC 2024

Apple is set to reveal ‘Project Greymatter,’ a suite of AI tools, at WWDC 2024, as per Mark Gurman. These tools will enhance core applications such as Safari, Photos, and Notes. AI features for simpler tasks will operate on the device itself, while more demanding operations will utilize cloud-based servers powered by the M2 Ultra chip.
The company aims to assure customers of data security, emphasizing a difference from Google and Meta’s approach to customer profiles. The anticipated AI features for iOS 18 include voice memo transcription, AI-powered photo editing, improved search capabilities in Spotlight and Safari, smart email and message replies, upgraded Siri interactions, AI enhancements in Xcode, generative AI for custom emojis, and smart recaps for various types of content.
Although Apple may not introduce its AI chatbot in iOS 18, it is expected to integrate third-party chatbots, with a partnership already established with OpenAI. Talks with Google about integrating their chatbot are ongoing but won’t be highlighted at WWDC.
Despite Apple’s efforts, it is suggested that the company will still be catching up to competitors in AI capabilities and may present the new features as a ‘preview.’ Nonetheless, Apple’s vast user base is likely to make it a significant player in the AI domain immediately. Further updates are anticipated ahead of WWDC 2024.
