Alan Turing Institute Receives New Grant from Gates Foundation

The Alan Turing Institute, a prominent UK-based AI and data science research entity, has been awarded a renewed grant of approximately $4 million (£3.1 million) from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. This funding, which spans three years, is dedicated to advancing secure, private, and trustworthy digital public infrastructure, particularly focusing on digital identity systems. The project will tackle several critical areas, including risk assessment of digital infrastructures, development of trust mechanisms for digital IDs in cross-border trade, secure data sharing methods, and enhancing skills to evaluate ID systems’ trustworthiness. This initiative is especially aimed at benefiting low- and middle-income countries. The Gates Foundation has previously supported the Institute with $5.1 million over four years, reinforcing their collaborative efforts to deliver reliable digital infrastructure globally. Project co-leads Prof Carsten Maple and Prof Jon Crowcroft emphasized the importance of extending their understanding of digital identity trustworthiness to broader digital infrastructures in the upcoming phase.
