Slack, the popular communication platform, has come under scrutiny for its machine-learning practices, which involve training models on user messages, files, and other content without explicit permission. This opt-out policy means that user data is automatically included unless action is taken to prevent it, a process that requires the intervention of an organization’s Slack administrator.

The controversy was ignited by Corey Quinn of DuckBill Group, who highlighted a section in Slack’s Privacy Principles. Slack responded to the backlash with a blog post clarifying that customer data is not used for training its generative AI products but for enhancing features like channel and emoji recommendations and search results. The company insists that this involves only de-identified, aggregate data and does not access the content of direct messages or channels.

Salesforce, Slack’s parent company, supported this stance, emphasizing that their models are designed to prevent learning, memorizing, or reproducing customer data. Despite these assurances, the discovery has sparked a debate about user privacy and the transparency of Slack’s policies.

To opt out of this data usage, organizations must contact Slack directly, a step that places the burden on users to protect their privacy. This policy has been criticized for not being straightforward, especially since it does not empower individual employees to opt out on their own.

Slack’s privacy policies have been called into question for potential inconsistencies, particularly regarding the company’s access to underlying content when developing AI/ML models. While Slack markets its premium generative AI tools with assurances of data privacy, the distinction between these tools and the machine learning models trained on user data without explicit permission has led to confusion and concern.

In response to the outcry, Slack has provided additional context on how customer data is utilized, aiming to alleviate concerns. However, the situation highlights the broader issues of data privacy and consent in the era of AI and machine learning advancements.
