Govt, News Publishers Discuss Ad Revenue Sharing

Government Meets with DNPA to Discuss Revenue Sharing with Big Tech

The Indian government held exploratory talks on Wednesday with the Digital News Publishers Association (DNPA) and other relevant departments to discuss a revenue-sharing mechanism with major tech companies like Google and Meta. This meeting, chaired by Information and Broadcasting Secretary Sanjay Jaju, aimed to address the DNPA’s demand for fair revenue distribution for the content that these tech companies use and monetize. The DNPA, representing India’s top 18 news publishers, argues that current practices have negatively impacted their businesses. The discussion sought to build a consensus on a legal framework to tackle issues such as bargaining power imbalance, unfair competition, and advertising revenue sharing. Similar legal steps have already been taken in countries like Australia and Canada.
