Brazilian Kids’ Data Leaked in AI Set

Child Privacy Breach in AI Image Training Dataset

A recent investigation by Human Rights Watch has uncovered the misuse of Brazilian children’s personal photos within a vast AI image training database, LAION-5B. These images, often scraped from the internet, include sensitive details such as names, ages, and locations, exposing the children to significant privacy violations and the risk of being targeted for the creation of malicious deepfakes. The discovery highlights over 170 photos across 10 Brazilian states, with some images dating back to the mid-1990s and as recent as 2023. This alarming revelation has led to calls for stricter safeguards on children’s data privacy and an urgent response from LAION, the German company managing the database, which has pledged to remove the identified photos. Human Rights Watch emphasizes the critical need for protective measures to secure the online privacy of children, advocating for legislative action to prevent such exploitations and safeguard against the potential harms of emerging AI technologies.
