Adobe Lightroom Introduces AI-Powered Feature to Easily Remove Unwanted Photo Elements
Adobe has introduced a new AI-powered feature called Generative Remove to its Lightroom photo editor, making it easier than ever to eliminate unwanted elements from photos, such as an intrusive person in the background. This feature, currently in public beta testing, is available across Lightroom’s mobile, desktop, and web applications. Leveraging Adobe’s Firefly AI engine, Generative Remove allows users to simply paint over the area they wish to remove. The request is processed by Adobe’s Firefly servers, which quickly return the edited image, with the time taken depending on the user’s internet connection speed.
This tool is distinct from Adobe Photoshop’s Reference Image feature, focusing instead on streamlining a photographer’s workflow. Generative Remove is particularly adept at handling larger objects and complex backgrounds, tasks that previously required extensive time and expertise. It generates three different versions of the edited photo, allowing users to select the best outcome.
While Adobe’s new feature bears similarities to Google Photos’ Magic Eraser tool, it underscores Adobe’s strategy of enhancing existing tools with AI to improve efficiency and effectiveness, rather than introducing groundbreaking new features. This approach seems to align with the practical needs of working photographers, prioritizing the refinement of tools over the addition of novel, potentially flashy features.
