OpenAI ChatGPT Recovers After Major Outage
OpenAI recently resolved a major outage of its ChatGPT service that occurred on June 4, causing disruptions for users across all plans for several hours. The issue, which was the first significant downtime for the AI company’s flagship product in a while, did not affect OpenAI’s platform or API services. The outage, starting at 2:15 PM GMT and resolved by 5:01 PM GMT the same day, led the company to advise users experiencing issues to perform a hard refresh on both desktop and mobile versions.
In related news, a group of current and former OpenAI and Google DeepMind employees have publicly called for protections against retaliation for raising concerns about the potential risks of AI technologies. Their letter highlights the lack of regulatory oversight over AI companies and points out that many AI-related risks are not yet addressed by existing laws, leaving employees as crucial watchdogs.
Furthermore, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen is expected to warn financial institutions about the risks and opportunities presented by the rapid evolution of AI in financial services. In a speech scheduled for the Financial Stability Oversight Council’s 2024 Conference on Artificial Intelligence & Financial Stability, Yellen will discuss concerns including the complexity of AI models, insufficient risk management frameworks, reliance on similar data and models by market participants, and potential biases in financial decision-making due to inadequate data.
