63-Hour Train Disruption Prompts Remote Work Push

Mumbai Local Train Disruptions Due to Mega Block for Platform Extensions

Mumbai’s local train services, crucial for daily commuters, will face a significant disruption due to a 63-hour mega block starting from Friday, May 31, to facilitate platform extension works at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) and Thane stations. The Central Railway’s Mumbai division announced that a total of 930 local trains and 72 mail-express trains will be canceled from Friday to Sunday to accommodate the construction activities aimed at widening platforms to allow for the installation of escalators and the development of wider staircases for foot over bridges.
The breakdown of cancellations includes 161 local trains on Friday, 534 on Saturday, and 235 on Sunday. Additionally, some long-distance trains will be either short-originated or short-terminated. The railway’s initiative has led to an appeal for companies to adopt work from home policies during this period to minimize commuter inconvenience. The Central Railway has coordinated with the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) and the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) to operate additional buses to offer alternative commuting options. The mega block, which is set to cause unavoidable cancellations of suburban trains, aims to improve infrastructure and commuter experience in the long run.
